Valhe - The end of the Lie

Valheen loppu. Melkein kaikki on mennyt, mennyttä. Kuinka valhe muuttaa muotoaan, muuttaa meitä. Kuinka on pakko luovuttaa ja päästää irti, antaa toivon tulla valheen tilalle. Valhe teki tehtävänsä.

The end of the lie. Almost everything is gone, finished. The lie has changed its form, changed us. You have to give up and let go, let hope replace the lie. The lie has fulfilled its purpose. 

Valhe - that day when you realise

Valhe. Sinä päivänä kun ymmärrät, että kaikki mihin uskoit on ollut pelkkää valhetta, ei mikään ole entisellään. Sinun totuutesi on sen jälkeen toinen, maailmasi muuttunut peruuttamattomasti. Haluaisit takaisin sen uskon ja turvallisen valheen, mutta paluuta ei ole.

A lie. That day when you realise that everything you believed in has been a lie, after that nothing is the same. Your truth is gone, your world has changed. You would like to get back that lie you believed in but it is not possible anymore.

Like it never happened, never existed. People just walk all over, destroy.

Kuin sitä ei olisikaan, täysin huomaamaton, ei olisi koskaan tapahtunut. Ihmiset vain kävelevät yli, tuhoavat.

You have to go back, once more, so that things would get an end, so that you could see something else than just the past.

Täytyy palata, vielä kerran, jotta asioille tulisi loppu, näkyisi muutakin kuin mennyt.

Poissa - Gone

Mitään ei ole jäljellä.

There is nothing left.

Nyt lupausta ei enää ole.

Haluaisimme olla korvaamattomia ja unohtumattomia. Sellaisia, joita kaivataan kun olemme poissa. Miten kuitenkin jokainen meistä lopulta katoaa, ei jää mitään.

Jäämme vain muistoksi, tarinaksi huulille. Muisto lupauksesta, joka kerran oli.

There is no more promise.

We would like to be irreplaceable and unforgettable. The ones that would be missed when we are gone. How everyone in the end disappears, there is nothing left.

We remain as a memory, as a story to be told. Memory of the promise that once was.

Melkein - Almost

Enää kaksi kirjainta jäljellä, U ja A. Pian on lupaus mennyt, syöty, kokonaan.

Kun tietää jonkun olevan lähellä loppua, on osattava päästää irti ja luopua. Annettava lopun tulla, pakottamatta, estämättä. Valmistauduttava olemaan ilman. Miten vaikeaa se monesti on, miten sitä haluaisi uskoa toisenlaiseen loppuun, sellaiseen, jossa ei tarvitsisi luopua mistään. Saisi pitää kaiken, menneen ja tulevan, pitää muistot ja toivon. 

Only two letters left, U and A. Soon it will be gone, eaten, completely.

When you know that something is close to the end, you should be able to let go and give up. Let the end come, without forcing it or trying to prevent it. You should be prepared to be without. How hard it often is, you would like to believe in a different kind of end, such that would not force you to give up on anything. You wish you could keep it all, the past and the future, keep the memories and the hope.

Vielä vähän jäljellä - Still something left

Neljä kirjainta siellä oksalla vielä sinnittelee, jotenkuten. Kohta syöty.

Vain vähän on jäljellä siitä mitä oli aluksi, sekin pian mennyt, syöty, kadonnut kokonaan. Talvi tosiaan tuli takaisin.

Only four letters are still hanging there, somehow. Almost eaten.

Only a little is left of what used to be, in the beginning. Almost gone, disappeared. Winter came back.

Lupa johonkin - Permission to do something

Enää pelkkä lupa. Lupa johonkin. Lupa sanoa ääneen. Lupa unohtaa. Lupa muistaa. Lupa olla vihdoinkin rehellinen kaikesta.

Tänään kevät on valoa. Mätäjoen varsi vielä murretuissa sävyissä. Pieniä silmuja puiden oksissa. Kesä tulee.

Just a permission anymore. Permission to do something. Permission to say out loud. Permission to forget. Permission to remember. Permission to be finally honest about everything.

Today the spring is light. The riverbank still has grey and brown coloring. Branches have small buds. Summer is coming.

Lupauksen kohtalo - The Fate of the Promise

Talvi tulee takaisin kerta toisensa jälkeen tänä keväänä. Niin elämässä muutenkin, samat asiat toistuvat, menemme sitä kohden mitä emme ymmärrä, kerta toisensa jälkeen.

Lupauksesta on tullut pelkkä lupa, toinen u on kokonaan syöty ja s:stäkin on pelkkä pieni tynkä jäljellä. Vastarannalta kun katsoo, roikkuu oksalla apu. Lupa ja apu.

Winter keeps coming back this spring time after time. Like in life in general, same things repeat, we go towards what we do not understand, time after time.

The promise, lupaus, has become solely lupa, which means permission. The other u letter has been eaten completely and there is only a small piece of the letter s left. When you look at the word from the other side, it says apu, help. Permission and help.

Lupaus pienenee päivä päivältä - The promise is getting smaller day by day

Mitä lupaus tarkoittaa? Rehellisyyttä, avoimuutta, sovitussa pysymistä. Tulevaisuutta, uskoa. Salaisuutta, jatkoa. Pettymystä. 

What does promise mean? Honesty, openness, keeping what has been agreed on. Future, faith. Secret, continuity. Disappointment.

Lupaukset joita teemme - The promises that we make

Annamme lupauksia. Petämme lupauksia. Itsellemme, toisillemme, tärkeille ja vähemmän tärkeille ihmisille.

Lupaamme olla uskollisia ja lainkuuliaisia. Lupaamme muuttua ja parantaa tapamme. Lupaamme laihtua ja tehdä asioita, jotka ovat arjen puristuksissa unohtuneet.

Lupaamme olla parempia, rakastaa enemmän, vihata vähemmän. Lupaamme unohtaa ja antaa anteeksi. Lupaamme sitoutua ja olla tukena.

Kun kaikki käy liian raskaaksi, vaikeutta on enemmän kuin helppoutta, lupaukset muuttuvat. Selittelemme ettemme oikeastaan tarkoittaneet mitä lupasimme, ettemme oikeastaan luvanneet mitään.

We make and break promises. We give promises to ourselves, to others, to meaningful and less meaningful people.

We promise to be loyal and law-abiding. We promise to change and behave better. We promise to loose weight and do things that we have set aside in our everyday life.

We promise to be better, love more, hate less. We promise to forget and forgive. We promise to commit and support.

When things turn out to be too difficult to handle, there is more worries than happiness, promises change. We explain that we did not mean what we promised, that actually we did not promise anything at all.

Lupaus on löydetty - The Promise has been found

Linnut ovat löytäneet lupauksen. Talvi on taittunut ja ajatus lupauksesta muuttunut. Talvisia kuvia en enää saa, kaupungin harmaanruskea, pölyinen kevät on tullut tilalle. Mutta niin on tullut myös valo.

Minun piti pystyttää tämä teos jo viime talvena, mutta silloin aika meni muuhun, johonkin joka tuntui tärkeämmältä. Vuosi sitten ajattelin lupausta, hankin tarvikkeita ja jätin lopulta teoksen tekemättä.

Vuosi sitten lupasin itselleni montakin asiaa ja kokonaisen vuoden kesti, ennen kuin pidin itselleni antamani lupaukset. Siksi tein teoksen kolmeen kertaan, koska nyt en enää pettäisi itseäni, koskaan.

Birds already know what they get. The winter is almost gone and my thoughts about promise have changed. I can no longer get beautiful winter pictures of the installation. The dusty, grey and brown spring is here. And so is the light and sun.

I planned to build this installation originally a year ago, but my time went into something that I thought was more important back then. A year ago I thought about it, gathered materials and then I did not make the installation after all.

A year ago I promised myself quite many things and it took a whole year to keep the promises that I made. That is why I did not give up and made the installation three times to get it together. I could not let myself down anymore, not this time. Not ever again.

Vihdoin - Finally

Siellä lupaus nyt vihdoin roikkuu syötävänä. Kolme yritystä se vaati. 

"Kolmas kerta toden sanoo.

Kolmannen kerran voimaan tuntuu olevan juuria monesta suunnasta. Raamatussa Pietari kielsi Jeesuksen kolme kertaa, saduissa saa toivoa kolme toivomusta, huutokaupassa kolmas kopautus sinetöi kaupan. Varmaan lähes kaikissa uskonnollisissa järjestelmissä on kolmijako tämä maailma - paratiisi - helvetti (mitä nimityksiä niistä käytetäänkin).

Sakari Virkkusen toimittamassa Suomalaisessa fraasisanakirjassa kerrotaan, että jo muinaisessa Egyptissä kolme oli pyhä luku. Myös kalevalaisissa sanonnoissa asiat tehdään usein kolmeen kertaan."

There it is, finally. It took three tries, third time lucky.

"Third time lucky.

Gary Martin at The Phrase Finder has the British phrase third time lucky derived from the earlier "proverbial" luck of the third adventure, traced in print back to 1839. As to the reason for the luck, the theory of it referring to an English law freeing a condemned man after three failed attempts at hanging is debunked. He concludes:

It seems more likely that it is just a folk belief that, having had setbacks, we ought to persevere and not give up. This is enshrined in the phrase 'try, try and try again'. Three seems to be the right number of times to try. Two isn't enough but four is too many. Think of every time you've seen a drama in which a character tries to unlock a door with an set of unfamiliar keys. The first key fails, the second key fails - it is always the third that works."

Lupaus meni rikki - The Broken Promise

Ehkä tämä on metafora jollekin, ehkä ei.

Lupaus rikkoontui, vain L ja P säilyivät ehjinä. Uusi lupaus ja uusi yritys parin päivän päästä. Aina voi aloittaa alusta, uudestaan, tehdä uudesta entistä paremman.

Maybe this is a metaphor for something, maybe not.

The promise was broken, only L and P survived. New promise and a new try in a couple of days. One can always start again, start over, make something new even better than it was before.
